The Convention People’s Party (CPP) will not be forced to hold an early congress to elect a presidential candidate for the 2012 election, the Chairperson of the party, Ms Samia Yaba Nkrumah has declared.

According to the party’s Chairperson, the decision is to ensure that the party does not repeat its poor showing at the 2008 presidential and general elections.

“We will not be stampeded into taking actions that do not advance the interests of the party. Organising congress takes time and as we all saw recently, the national congress to elect the National Executives had to be postponed several times before finally taken
place in September’’, she told the media at a briefing at the party headquarters in Accra Tuesday.

She was giving reasons that accounted for the delay by the party in fixing a date for its congress to elect a flagbearer.

Samia Nkrumah again said the party would not tolerate any ’’negative campaign’’ from Dr Paa Kwesi Nduom, the party’s aspiring flag bearer, in what she claimed were attempts to lure some minority of the National Executive Committee to force its national congress.

‘“The recent systematic and orchestrated attempt to undermine the authority and the agenda of the leadership has culminated in threats to convene an emergency NEC without recourse to the leadership,’’ she said.

She said CPP Executive had planned to hold the national congress to elect its flagbearer early next year.

According to her, the CPP, before arriving at a decision to fix a permanent date, had to seek for consensus from its executive.

“We cannot just go ahead to fix a date without first putting into consideration the leadership of the CPP. By doing so, it would mean the party is not serious about next year’s election.

Samia Nkrumah said the party would want to present a flag bearer whose intention was not about’’ his own selfish gains and prospect’’.

“Our insistence on re-organising and strengthening our party is motivated by our intention to present Ghanaians with a credible political alternative and this includes offering Ghanaians a credible presidential candidate for 2012,’’ she mentioned.

She admitted that CPP was facing some problems but stressed that it was the beginning of change that would ensure a massive outcome in the 2012 general election.

“Our party is not divided and what is perceived as division is what I consider as indiscipline and an attempt to impose a course of action on the whole party, ‘’ she pointed out.

Samia Nkrumah observed that CPP leadership needed a leader who had the tendency to address his grievances with the party’s executive and not to forcefully enforce its endorsement from the minority.

In response to the threat by the youth organisers to hit the street, Samia said the executives of the party were not moved but would rather call that a petition.

She said that the party, in attempting to raise its national profile since her leadership was brought to power, has reached out to grassroots and the wider public by visiting several regions.

“We aim to increase the visibility and profile of the party, reconstituting the committee, opening of offices in all constituencies and region and fundraising for the party,’’ she said.

In an interview with Daily Graphic, the Second National Vice Chairperson, Rhodaline Imoru Ayarna described the action of one- third of NEC as ‘’ a plan rooted and grounded by members who allow for corrupt gains’’.

She indicated that early congress was not the solution to CPP’s problem, stressing that ‘’ we need united members who would not allow for any intimidation and attacks from its so-called one- third of its executives’’.

Mr Ayarna condemned the actions of the one-third NEC and said the party would soon decide on what to do with them.

An aspirant of the party, Mr George Aggudey, disagreed for an early congress for CPP stating that ‘’ We should focus much more on building the party from within before we can resort to any decision to go public.

He again said CPP was under a new leadership and a new transformation who were in favour of change.
